I'm worried about Dot

I can smell that smell on her head again. The one that was on that other doll whose hair turned to powder. I'm starting to think that I won't be able to save my bright baby. :(

Jesus, please show me what to do?

Okay, so I've been researching some about disintegrating doll hair because I'm worried about Dot (and I used to work for libraries, so I will researching something I want to know to DEATH). Why I think she's still smelling weird is because even though you cut all the hair off, it's still rooted in her head, so that vinyl is still slowly breaking down, just now it's doing it in her head (gah!).

I just shipped off all the fashion dolls I could've experimented with, but is there a way to get the last little roots out of her head? You're going to be covering it all up with a wig anyway, so what do you think? Can you dig them out?

From what I've been learning 1) it's really weird that it would be happening to a doll as young as Dot and 2) it sounds like it really is the hair residue making the smell and not Dot herself (yaay!)

Not that you need to be doing surgery on another doll, but that's what I found. If you think that isn't the case, don't do it. I won't be offended. But that was all I could find.:(

Good luck. Thinking good thoughts for you and Dot.

I did dig it out. I even poked a needle through the holes that it hadn't come out of. And the smell was gone for awhile. And very faint now. But it worries me 'cause I'm afraid her head will break down too.

And yeah, I know she's young for it. They must have used old stuff to make her.

Thanks so much for the looking, Wendy.

Go you! See, you're already all over it! That being the case, I wouldn't worry about it anymore. If you really want to, wash her off really really good (shower time for Dot!) and maybe scrub her little head with a toothbrush or something along those lines and some dishsoap to try to get the last of that powdery hair stuff out.

Don't worry about the rest of her. The kind of vinyl/plastic making up the rest of Dot is completely different from the type they use for hair, and it breaks down differently (it tends to go sticky, and if THAT happens, you just let me know 'cause I read all about how to fix that! I are an expert now!). She isn't going to suddenly turn to powder on you, promise. :) (crossing heart and hoping to spit)

So you play with her all you want and send her big hugs from Aunt Wendy in Colorado. 'k? And quit worrying. Your little bright baby is going to be just fine. :)

Acetone/nail polish remover. Chances are it'll eat the rest of the residue, but leave the vinyl intact. Just give it a swab over her head and be really careful not to touch her paint job with it. If you can *urk* remove her head, swab the inside too. Then rinse and wash with dishsoap and water :) If it's just broken-down-hair residue that's starting to eat your vinyl, like Wendy suggested above me, getting rid of it is your best bet.

I know I say "use acetone" for everything, but it WORKS. 8D

I've got the nail polish remover. Gonna have to try that.

Just make sure it's NOT acetone-free. 8D

Next time you hit up a wally world, they should have like 700mL bottles of acetone for $1.99 next to all the nail polish stuff.
