I went looking for the 3" GI Joe action figure that I want today, and couldn't find him at any of the stores I visited. Instead, I impulsively bought the Teen Trends doll that I've looked at a few times over the past year(Kiana or whatever she was called). I felt that she was only a visitor, something to play with till I tired of her and then passed her on.
But now I'm looking at her, and hearing her character talking to me, and I'm wondering if she's actually one of my children. She sends out such a feeling of calm, warm-hearted independance every time I look at her, and the fact that she's a strung doll is utterly fascenating to me. She's about the same size and shape as the BJD I was thinking of getting (but have decided against yet again), with lovely big feet complete with toes (so rare on Mattel dolls).
She's speaking to me, just like my Jabez and the others who visit in the travel doll group speak to me, stirring my imagination and causing an answering response of storytelling and character formation. She's definately no thirteen year old, though. More a young woman of perhaps nineteen. I could imagine her talking as I got her free from all the ties, not just to me, but to Jabez, who's been looking sad lately. And now she's sitting on the bed with her shoes and jacket off, watching me type with a warm smile and gently covering one of Jabez's feet with her hand.
I'm still not sure yet, but perhaps Mara is here to stay.
